Financing Your Education

Financing your Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS) education is an investment in a better future.

At the time of admissions, qualified admitted students may be considered for departmental fellowships and employment assistance in the form of temporary hourly employment without fringe benefits. See below for these fellowship and award opportunities.

In general though, students admitted to the MS MPSDS program will not be provided tuition assistance. Financial aid for graduate students is typically limited. However, external and University resources may have funding assistance available through the Rackham School of Graduate Studies, the University Work-Study program and the University of Michigan’s Office of Financial Aid Office.

The Office of Financial Aid also provides detailed guidelines related to the cost of attendance at the University.  This information will be useful to students when researching funding opportunities for their graduate studies within the Program in Survey and Data Science.

Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science Fellowships and Awards

MPSDS Achievement Fellowships are structured to assist eligible MS students with four-terms of tuition support, full-time enrollment is required.

Achievement Fellowships are open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a record of superior academic achievement who are either from educational, cultural or geographic backgrounds that are underrepresented in graduate study in survey and data science in the United States or at the University of Michigan; have demonstrated commitment to diversity; have experienced financial hardship as a result of family economic circumstances; or are (or will be) the first generation in their family to graduate from a four-year college or first-generation U.S. citizens in their families.

A stipulation of being awarded this funding is that the awarded student(s) will be involved in community building within MPSDS. Community building is all about bringing people together and creating a sense of inclusiveness, something MPSDS values. To that end, the recipient will be expected to spend an average of 10 hours per month on community building events during the academic term. The selected fellow will be supported financially to participate in professional development activities related to the field of survey and data science. Continued funding will be contingent on academic success, employment performance, and community engagement.

Traineeships are frequently available for one or two top MS applicants. The traineeships are with the Survey Research Operations (SRO) unit in the Survey Research Center of the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. Decisions for this fellowship are based on the graduate program application materials; no separate application is required.

The full-time study traineeship provides support for two years of study. It provides tuition support for four-terms (two years); hourly employment for four-terms (possible summer work also available); commit to fulfill two years of permanent employment to begin upon completion of the MPSDS master’s degree program.

Survey Research Operations (SRO) is the main data collection unit within the Survey Research Center (SRC). SRO constitutes over half of SRC, and provides a wide range of survey design, data collection and data processing services. SRO staff members work closely with members of the Survey Methodology Program and incorporate cutting-edge methodology and technical systems into their projects. SRO conducts national surveys as well as small-scale, regional, and methodological surveys.

MPSDS encourages enrolled MPSDS students to share their research and learn from others at conferences around the world. Students may apply for MPSDS travel funding to help cover the cost of travel to attend these conferences that are of direct relevance to their research and training.
