The Journey to MPSDS
December 2, 2025
My journey to the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS) began in July 2023, when I discovered a DEI initiative focused on survey methodology education for undergraduates within the Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques (SISRT). The SISRT was hosted by MPSDS and provided a brief coursework on survey methodology, where I was able to learn about the intersectionality of research, psychology, survey methodology, and data science.
In October 2023, I was given the opportunity to visit the University of Michigan through the generous SISRT travel grant. I was able to tour the campus, attend courses, and speak with current students and faculty members, allowing me to learn about MPSDS hands-on instead of through a webpage. I felt a strong sense of familiarity to the campus and an increased sense of identity after my travel experience.
Coming from a low-income, immigrant background, this was my first experience of anyone investing into my educational exploration. This was especially foreign to my parents, who thought that it was too good to be true, and there must be a catch. It was my first time traveling on my own, exploring an unfamiliar city, and figuring out the public transportation system by myself. All of this helped me to mature, develop, and expand my soft skills.
MPSDS recently redesigned this initiative within SISRT as the Pathways Program, which also gives prospective students the opportunity to visit the University. This will always be a fundamental memory that I’ve appreciated, and I encourage future students to explore the MPSDS and the Pathways Program.
