My first thoughts when it came to applying to graduate school was: ‘Have I fallen and hit my head on something hard? Why do I want to subject myself to more school?’ The short answers were no (obviously) and why not.

Before starting my first master’s degree at the School of Public Health (SPH) at the University of Michigan (U of M) in 2010, I did not know much about Survey and Data Science until I took a very interesting course on sampling that year. While studying at the SPH, I was also involved in several survey projects.

I was a student in Survey and Data Science at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and received my master's degree in 2004. I studied at the University previously at several of the Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques sessions, where I earned certificates in survey sampling and focus groups before joining the master's degree program.

The Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS) has an extraordinary place in my heart and memories. The program helped me to expand my knowledge in quantitative methods and statistics and gain a more holistic perspective about survey research.

The Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS) has been a place to allow me to grow, professionally, academically and as an individual. From my first visit to the program when preparing to apply, staff and faculty were very generous with their time and when I was accepted had a couple of professors even reach out welcoming me to the program. These experiences stood out and made the decision easy to come here because of how welcomed you were made to feel.
